HOME SECURITY: How to Wire and Install a Security Alarm System (DIY Tips: Door Contacts)

Free Home Security Advice & Tips.- When you are ready to layout your alarm system design, for installation you must first decide where to mount the alarm control. If you have an unfinished basement, you will be drilling down and running your wires in the rafters to the area that you select for the panel. Most often this will be the mechanical or furnace room.

If you are working on a single story building, you will be running your wires up into an unfinished attic anddropping your wires down to the control.

If you are in a commercial application you will run your wires on top of drop ceilings or along beams or possibly through exposed conduit.

If you are in a place where there is no place to run all these wires and hide them then you are a prime candidate for a wireless system.

You want to make sure that wherever you decide to mount your alarm control panel, that you have a device such as a motion detector or door contact to protect it. Leaving the control panel in an unprotected area could make it easy to circumvent in the event of a break in. Consider running the wires through the basement, and than jumping them up into a closet, in the protected area of the house. If you are wondering "what about the exposed wires in the basement? Don't." Cutting the wires would duplicate opening of the device they are running to, and would cause an alarm condition if the system were armed.

If you elect to go wireless on your system of choice, choose a central location in the home or business that will receive a strong radio signal from all points of protection. Remember that even on wireless system there are some wires that will need to be run. Most often they are the keypad, the siren, the power supply and the phone line. Take these runs into consideration when choosing your central location.

Provide lighting for the chosen area, as this will be where you are doing most of your installation work. Lay out a tarp and place all products and tools and a trash bag in this area. I have learned over the years to come to my central location to get what I need, and return everything I’m not using back to this location when I am done with them, especially tools. If you do not run an organized installation, you will spend ½ of your time searching for a tool, part, spool of wire etc. A tool belt is handy for the tools you will need everywhere, such as fresh drill bits, tape, wire cutters, screwdrivers, B- connects, a small bubble level, stud finder, a clean rag, etc.

You also want to clean as you go. As you finish running each wire and installing the device that will go there, take the time to clean up and bring all trash to the bag at your control zone. Being anal is a good thing, when you are doing a quality installation.

As you run each wire to the control room, measure where the wire is going to come into the control panel hole, and then add about a foot of wire before cutting it with your diagonal cutters. Place a piece of light colored electrical tape around the wire about 5 inches from the end and write on the tape with an indelible sharpie or marker where it is going.

If your home or business is under construction you may elect to pre-wire it for security. Pre-wiring is beneficial in the ability to get every device in the exact location you would want it. Placing wires and gang boxes before construction is complete, is dependent on your ability to read the architects plans and understand where cabinets, appliances and electrical devices will be placed with accuracy. If you do elect to pre-wire be sure to drill your own holes in the wall studs and rafters. Many a lazy alarm technician will run through the electrical and plumbers holes and think they are getting away easy. The problem is that if an electrician or plumber fails inspection they will have to pull wire and pipe out to relocate them to the inspector's specifications. They are not likely to be concerned about your wire, when doing so.

The best time to run your wires on a pre-wire is immediately after the electricians leave and before the insulators arrive.

If you are ready to start running wires, lets start with the front door. If you are going down to the basement you will be working low on the opening side of the door. If you are running your wires up you will be working on the top of the door. Lets use down for our example. What kind of contact will you be using? Surface mount or recessed? If you are running wires anyway, why don't you take the time to install recessed contacts so that they are out of site when the door is closed? Set up your drill with a 3/8-inch standard length drill bit.

In the jam of the door, approximately 4 inches from the bottom begin drilling at an angle towards the basement. Switch to your 3/8- inch by 12 to 18 inch long drill bit and continue drilling towards the basement, finally switch to your 5-foot long bell hangers bit and continue drilling till you pop out in the basement. Pull the long bit out of the hole and remove it from the hole. Poke the skinny end of the long bit down the hole.

Go down to the basement with a flashlight, diagonal wire cutters, tape, marker, staple gun with staples in it, and a spool or box of 22 gauge 2 conductor wire. Strip the plastic off of the end of your wire about 2 inches. Twist the 2 wires together and thread them through the hole at the end of the skinny side of the long bit and twist it around itself. Go back upstairs and pull the wire up to the hole. Tie a large loose and temporary knot in the wire after you get it there, so that it will not fall back in the hole. Leave at least 12 inches upstairs, so that you can work with the wire.

Go back downstairs and begin to roll out enough wire to make it to your control panel. Staple the wires with an industrial stapler like a T22 along the beams in a neat and orderly manner from the drop hole towards the control panel. Be sure you are not penetrating the wire with each staple, if you do, remove it now and re-staple. These mistakes are hard to trace after you walk away. Be sure to make it down the wall stud to where you will poke into the back of your control panel (about chest high) and leave an additional foot or more of wire before cutting it off the spool. Mark your wire with the tape and marker several inches from the end.

Congratulations! You made your first run. Be sure to gather and return all tools to the starting point so that you know where they are when you need them.

Get your 3/8 inch recessed contact and magnet. You will need a drill, extension cord (unless you are using a wireless drill), electrical tape, and a wire cutter. Split the end of you wire and strip a small amount of plastic cover off of each end. Do the same with your contact unless you have the type that has small screws for the wires to be clamped under. Twist each end of your wire to an end of the contact wire and tape tightly and individually. After you do each one you can wrap a piece of tape around the whole thing tightly. (It does not matter which wire goes to which wire as this is a circuit wire, and has no positive or negative side.) Carefully poke the wire into the hole and press the contact in. Now mark the door in the spot that the magnet will meet the contact, when the door is closed. Stabilize the door and drill a 3/8 " hole just deep enough to put the magnet in. Repeat for each door you want contacted. We always suggest that you contact every perimeter door.

TAXES TIPS: Hybrid Vehicles and Tax Benefits

Free Taxes Advice & Tips.- You have to love car dealers. With the passage of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, car dealers are screaming about the tax benefits of buying these vehicles. Here’s the scoop.

Deductions and Credits
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 made a major modification to the tax benefits of owning a hybrid vehicle in an effort to entice businesses and individuals to pursue cleaner fuel uses. The primary switch was to move the tax benefits from deductions to credits. Specifically, the Act creates a credit that can be claimed by taxpayers who purchase one of these super fuel efficient vehicles.

Taxpayers can now claim a credit of as much as $3,400 per vehicle. This is a HUGE tax break because credits are subtracted from the amount of tax you owe, not your gross income. If you can claim a credit of $3,400 and owe $5,000 after figuring your tax, you end up paying $1,600. Anyway you look at it, this is a very powerful tax savings benefit.

There are a few problems with the new credit for hybrid vehicles. First, the credits only apply to vehicle purchases beginning January 1, 2006. If you purchased in 2005, you get to claim a pitiful little deduction covered later on this page. Deductions have much less impact on your taxes since they are applied to gross earnings.

Second, the credit amount is not set regardless of what dealers or the media is saying. As of February 10, 2006, the IRS hasn’t issued any guidance on the credit amount. When it does, the IRS will set a particular credit amount for each vehicle and model. In coming up with a figure, the IRS analyze how clean the vehicle is from an emissions point of view, the size and other things that a mechanic would understand. How an IRS agent understands these issues is beyond me, but such is life. Regardless, the IRS will be issuing the credit amounts for particular vehicles as we move through 2006.

If you purchased your hybrid in 2005, you do not get to claim a credit against the amount you owe Uncle Sam. Instead, you claim a deduction in the amount of $2,000 from your adjusted gross earnings. While this doesn’t have nearly the impact of a credit, at least you get something.

SATELLITE TV TIPS: Troubleshooting your Cable Box

Free Satellite or TV Service Advice & Tips.- Unless you’ve recently moved from Alaska to Texas and you’re feeling a little homesick, chances are that the last thing you want to see when you turn on your TV is snow. Combine a snowy screen with that loud, obnoxious static sound, and you’ve got a problem on your hands. Fortunately you don’t have to be techie to fix your cable box – just follow these simple troubleshooting steps to get picture back in no time.

Cable Box Basics
Make sure your cable box is plugged in. I know that sounds silly, but after troubleshooting these things over the phone professionally, you can trust me on this one. Save yourself the time and embarrassment of calling a professional just to have them tell you to plug it in. That goes for the rest of the essential equipment as well (i.e. TV, VCR or DVR if you’re running the signal through one, etc.). It wouldn’t hurt to make sure the TV is on the correct channel – usually channel 3 or 4 or one of the input channels.

Make sure all the cables are connected. Even if you’re TV and cable box are both turned on, you won’t see a picture unless they are connected. Check each connection to ensure it is tight and that none of the wires or connecting pieces is damaged. Also check to see that the connections are all correct – meaning, video and audio should be going out of your cable or satellite box to your TV “in” ports. The signal should follow a logical path. If the connections are correct but you’re still not seeing any picture, replace the cables to see if that solves the problem. If you’re running the signal through a DVR or VCR and having problems, skip the middle man and plug the cables straight from the box to the TV. If you get a picture you know you’re problem is in the VCR.

After making sure everything is on and the cable connections are all correct, try rebooting your system. Each company’s receivers have different methods of rebooting, but one fairly universal way is to unplug the box for 10 to 20 seconds and then plug it back in. Do not just turn the box off and back on again – you’ll need to actually pull the plug out of the wall and then put it back in again. Once the cable box is plugged back in, turn the power on and cross your fingers. If you’re still not receiving any picture, unplug the receiver again for up to one minute and then plug it back in. This may be tedious and time-consuming, especially when you’re missing the fight of the year or the Super Bowl, but give it the full minute – you’ll spend less time doing it yourself than you will waiting for a repairman to come out and fix it.

Fuzzy Picture or Sound
If you are getting a picture but no sound; or sound but no picture; or a fuzzy picture or sound, recheck the cable connections to make sure they are tightened and that the wires or connecting pieces are undamaged. Poor picture or sound is typically caused by one of three problems: poor wire connections, signal interference, or TV settings.

Going outside to make sure nothing is interfering with your signal will help with the second problem. Of course, if you have underground cables there is not much you can do about making sure they are clear of interference (that’s read, “Your neighbor cut through it while gardening”). If you have a satellite dish, know that excessive rain or snow buildup on the dish can cause signal interference. Use caution when checking your dish, especially if it is on your roof or some other hard-to-reach place around your house. The installer should have verified that no trees or other objects would interfere with your signal from the satellites, but take a quick look around to see if new foliage is blocking the signal. If it is not on your property, do not cut or remove anything without prior permission from the property owner.

Finally, adjusting your TV settings can help when you are receiving a clear signal and all the connections are fine. Horizontal and vertical settings are the adjustments that most often need to be made, but consulting your owner’s manual can give you a better indication of other settings that can be tweaked.

Troubleshooting requires patience, so make some lemonade, roll up your sleeves, and get started. If none of these suggestions work (9 times out of 10 they will), contact your service provider. They may have additional troubleshooting steps or resources they can make available to you to get your cable or satellite TV up and running.

Overview
The latest technology buzz is WiMAX wireless networks. We have heard many things about this wonderful new long haul wireless technology that it almost seems as though you are just a phone call away from having yours' designed and installed. Well before you start assuming things like we all do, we thought as engineers and network architects we would share personal experiences and the experiences of colleagues from around the world, in a manner that is direct, helpful, educational, and certainly reality based. This is a backpocket Primer for anyone now dealing with the implementation of a WiMAX network.

First, there are several misconceptions surrounding WiMAX that need to be cleared up so that the business aspects and engineering basis have a common understanding.

Secondly, the people who make the various decisions within your organizations need to understand that there are differences between a private network and an interoperable network strategy. This subtle difference does exist and requires a plan which considers the final transition aspects, if considered now, to easily provide a lower cost upgrade to a true interoperable network, now incorporating diverse vendor equipment.

Finally, while WiMAX has been out internationally for several years, it is very new to the United States, only a few months old, with very little training and education available to those who have the responsibility to build these systems or those who will make the financial and technical decisions to have these systems built for them as part of their long haul wireless strategy.

Our experiences and the experiences of our collegues are offered here as contributions as well as tying these in to the standards and certification authorities all meant to provide a reality based quick reference education for anyone in the throws of How to Build a WiMAX network.

Primer
WiMAX is a standard designed for fixed broadband wireless access featuring a controlling base station, that connects subscriber stations not to each other but to various public networks, such as the Internet, linked to that base station. The acronym means “ worldwide interoperability for microwave access” or (WiMAX).

WiMAX, as a standards initiative, is based on a "set of profiles" supporting a wide range of frequencies (up to 66GHz)with channel sizes (1.25MHz to 20MHz) and applications (LOS and NLOS), and finally PTP and PTMP. The WiMAX profiles narrow the scope of 802.16 to focus on first service specific configurations. The IEEE titled the specification 802.16 and released it December 2002. The profiles addressed in that “profiles release” are 802.16-2004 (old d) and 802.16e as presented further down.

The WIMAX forum was formed eight months earlier in April 2002 to support, promote and certify compatibility and interoperability of devices based on the 802.16 specification, and to develop such devices for the marketplace. Founding Members of the organization include Airspan, Alvarion, Analog Devices, Aperto Networks, Ensemble Communications, Fujitsu, Intel, Nokia, OFDM Forum, Proxim, and Wi-LAN.

WiMAX is the IEEE 802.16 Point-to-Multipoint broadband wireless access standard for systems in the stated frequency ranges. WiMAX will initially provide fixed nomadic, portable and eventually, mobile wireless broadband connectivity. To that end there are two standards (802.16d (new -2004) and 802.16e respectively) although they will both perform similar functions because they must be interoperable. One clearly is a fixed solution and the other a mobile solution that must still communicate with a fixed solution. So one of the first considerations is whether you want to build out a mobile or fixed network. In many cases you would have already considered your target market segments, spectrum availability, regulatory constraints and your deployment need.

Which One do I Need?
Generally speaking, the current 802.16-2004 (originally 802.16d) fixed network products are less complex than 802.16e mobile network systems because; they can be used in a wider range of unlicensed bands, they offer a faster time-to-market, and in many cases a higher throughput than 802.16e equipment. On the other hand, there is better support for mobility and a wider range of terminal form factors advantages of 802.16e equipment.

It’s certainly a consideration but no matter what you chose the migration paths to move in either direction are easily achieved through overlay networks, software upgradeable base stations, dual mode devices and dual mode base stations. This consideration assures you are not stuck in one mode or the wrong mode and that your initial investment is protected. Makes the CTO and CEO happy.

WiMAX base stations transmit up to 30 miles, but because it is a cell-based topology, would yield a more typical range of 3 to 5 miles. WiMAX systems can deliver a capacity of up to 75 Mbps per channel, for fixed and portable access applications. This is enough bandwidth to simultaneously support hundreds of businesses with T-1 speed connectivity and thousands of residences with DSL speed connectivity as we have seen.

WiMAX technology will be incorporated in portable computers and PDAs expected in late 2006 and early 2007, allowing for urban areas and cities to become “MetroZones”, the new buzz word, for portable outdoor broadband wireless access. In addition, Wireless service providers and telecommunication equipment industries are embracing WiMAX technology because of its tremendous cost advantages to provide that last-mile connectivity to large parts of the world that are too expensive to serve with wired technologies requiring all that trenching.

Security
Due to the security issues with WEP in the 802.11 Wi-Fi arenas, the standards bodies took no chances with WiMAX, and wisely prioritized security from the onset. Base station designers went to work to assure a dedicated high performance security processor. The WiMAX security standard requires that all traffic be encrypted with CCMP (which is Counter Mode with Cipher Block Chaining Message Authentication Code Protocol).

According to the WiMAX forum, the group's aim is for end-to-end authentication. WiMAX uses PKM-EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol), which relies on the TLS standard following public key cryptography. Having addressed this level of security from the start provides an excellent reference point to add multi-level security options as well, if your implementation requires an MLS approach. Secure (blacker) implementations would require such an approach.

What is Released?
The first certification release for 802.16-2004 fixed is out there already and includes products from certified vendors with two profiles in the 3.5GHz and the 5.8GHz bands supporting fixed and nomadic access. The profiles for 802.16e mobile are not available nor released as of this writing but are expected to be in the ranges of 2.3GHz to 2.5GHz when officially released.

WiMAX profiles based on 802.16-2004 are better suited to fixed applications that use directional antennas because OFDM is inherently less complex than SOFDMA used in the mobile application. As a results, 802.16-2004 networks will be deployed much faster and at a lower cost. Our experiences are with these released systems in the US and around the world in ground applications, mobile military, public safety and maritime applications.

Planning for WIMAX
Companies, cities or projects in maritime or ground systems in the US that have decided to or are considering building and operating a WiMAX network will have a few important issues to consider. The initial spectrum for WiMAX in the USA is unlicensed spectrum in the 5GHz range. Given this spectrum is open it will have inherent interference issues and risks which will require attention. There are many ways of overcoming interference issues. The answers come from a proper site selection, following your RF survey training and from the actual selected equipment. So, the planning and site survey results remain the key to your confident success.

Summary
WiMAX provides optimized solutions for fixed, nomadic, portable and mobile broadband wireless access. There are two flavors in various release and implementation modes. The first is 802.16-2004 WiMAX with two initial frequency profiles – the 3.5GHz and the 5.8GHz bands supporting fixed and nomadic access in LOS and NLOS environments now. Free IPTV Tips & Advice.- The revolution is just getting started and will begin to make its mark this year. By 2010, it will begin to take off. By 2025, it will be the standard for all TV viewing.

It's called Internet Protocol Television, or IPTV for short. IPTV works with a set-top box connected to any broadband interface and to a TV. It will allow users to choose among thousands (and eventually hundreds of thousands) of hours of programming, including movies, sports, classic TV, etc., and download their selections from the internet to the hard drive of the set-top box.

Initially, set-top box hard drives will be able to store up to 300 hours of programming at a time, but capacity will expand as the technology becomes more refined. Also, download times will become shorter and shorter as broadband connection speeds become faster and faster. Eventually, a two-hour movie will be fully downloadable in a couple of minutes. Once the programs are downloaded to the hard drive, they can be viewed on the connected TV at any time via a DVR-type interface provided by the set-top box.

Besides the convenience of an all video-on-demand (VOD) environment, IPTV will provide a much wider range of programming than broadcast, cable, and satellite TV, or even major video chains, could ever provide. Because the programming is available from the internet, it will be almost completely unlimited and unconstrained. Programming from all over the world will be available along with every imaginable genre of niche programming.

Also, previously unreleased independent films that have been sitting on shelves for years due to the lack of a distribution source will suddenly become available to the masses via IPTV. Films that previously could not be made at all will become a reality and be available on the IPTV services. Long forgotten films and TV shows will have new life breathed into them by IPTV.

To top it all off, much of this programming will be eventually be available in high definition (HDTV)! Most IPTV platforms will be divided into "channels", but not the same kind of channels that we have grown accustomed to with traditional TV services. In this case, a "channel" is defined as a division of an IPTV service by individual content provider. Each content provider carried by a given IPTV platform will have its own guidelines for delivering programming on its channel. Some will provide their content for free to everyone who owns a given IPTV product. Some will be subscription based, i.e., everything on their channels will be available for a monthly or annual subscription. Others will be all pay-per-view. Still others will provide a combination of all of the above. Several entrants into this market have either already debuted or plan to debut sometime this year. Among those are Akimbo (www.akimbo.co.nr), DAVETV (www.dave.tv), TimeShifTV (www.timeshiftv.com), and VCinema (www.vcinema.com).

In addition, a joint venture between TiVo (www.tivo.com) and NetFlix (www.netflix.com) will be starting up later this year. TiVo plans to eventually make the entire Netflix DVD library available to its customers on an on-demand basis via a broadband connection to a TiVo box and a TV. Other potential IPTV contenders will be announcing their intentions over the next year or two.

One of these nascent IPTV services headquartered near my home has already started placing "help wanted" ads in my local newspaper. Within the next 20 years, all the fuss over broadcast TV indecency will become irrelevant, as there will be very little other than news and live sporting events on broadcast TV. The major networks will shift most of their entertainment programs to IPTV to avoid all the broadcast content restrictions currently being enforced by the FCC. Eventually, broadcast TV will cease to exist. Cable and satellite services as we know them will also become extinct. Yes, there will still be cable and satellite platforms, but they, along with DSL and wireless internet services, will exist merely as conduits for bringing broadband internet into homes and offices. There won't be any more cable and satellite TV, per se.

The now 60-year-old paradigm of television schedules in which programs air at specific times on specific days of the week will pretty much be a thing of the past. Everything, except what's left of broadcast TV, will be exclusively available on demand via an IPTV platform. These developments in no way mean that all TV programming will become more risqué. While there will be plenty of risqué programming available to those who want it, there will an almost unlimited supply of family and religious programs available. With a veritable smorgasbord of entertainment options at your fingertips, there will be something available for all tastes.

IPTV may not turn out to be a TV utopia, but it's at least going to come close that ideal.

This technology is commonly referred to as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) or IP Telephony. Broadband phone service converts voice signals to digital packets which are routed to their destination and reconverted at the receiving end.

There are a few drawbacks that you need to be aware of if you are planning to switch to broadband phone service. There are still some reliability and security issues but it's likely that these will soon be addressed as consumer and business demand for broadband phone service increases.

LAND LINE PHONE TIPS: What to do if your phone have a noise everytime you use it?

Free Land Line Phone Advice.- It's very hard to diagnose this type of problem from my blog, but I can show you what to do if your phone have this problem.

With land line phone problems like this generally, there's isn't much that an ordinary consumer can do to resolve this problem. The problem either lies within the telephone itself or in the telephone company's system. However, if it was a problem with the telephone company's system, then you probably would have experienced this issue with your previous telephone. A call to your phone company's repair number may result in some help (usually doesn't get you very far in my experience).

The best thing to do is: Get another good working telephone plug it on your home phone jack and hear if the noise come back. If you hear the noise again, then you need to call your local telephone provider and tell them what's happening. If you hear no noise then you need to get a new telephone.

My recommendation would be to take it back to the store for refund or exchange. If you can't take it back to the store (for whatever reason), then I would contact the manufacturer and ask them to provide a (preferably new) replacement. Most products of this nature have at least a 90 day warranty.

Call them quickly to insure that they will support the product that you've purchased.

Free VoIP Advice.- For people phoning to a VoIP line, it is impossible to distinguish from a regular land line. It has a regular telephone number and the costs are identical.

Dialing from a VoIP line appears like a land line to anyone you call.

However, VoIP is not a land line, it is a digital service and there are some circumtances where there are critical differences. For example, a standard VoIP line will not support a fax machine (you can usually buy a fax line at a higher cost).

COGNI360 TAX TIPS: Alas! In E-Commerce Taxland

In trying to comply with tax laws for your e-business,
you may find yourself falling down the rabbit-hole,
going through the looking glass, and attending a Mad
Tea-Party.

Common sense, logic, and fairness never did apply
fully to the field of taxation but this is especially
true of e-commerce transactions.

1. Canada Customs Welcomes You to Canada!

Since I`m located in Canada, let`s start here.

Canada has what you might call a national sales tax
or a value added tax (VAT). This Goods and Services
Tax (G.S.T.) of seven percent is applicable to many
Canadian transactions.

Not only is it critical to determine whether a taxable
sale was made in Canada or not, but also where in
Canada. If it was made (or deemed to be made) in any
of the Harmonized Sales Tax (H.S.T.) provinces (Nova
Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador),
a higher, fifteen percent H.S.T. rate applies. This
is because those provinces have allowed Canada to
collect their provincial sales taxes for them.

As well, each province and territory has its own
rules. Ontario charges eight percent retail sales tax
on many typical Internet transactions whereas Alberta
has no provincial sales tax.

Of course, this is only scatching the surface. This
entire article is an over-simplification of a very
complex subject. You will definitely need
professional advice to help you through E-Commerce
Taxland.

2. When Exports Aren`t Exports

In Canada, exports are "zero-rated" sales for G.S.T.
purposes. This means that when you ship a product to
someone outside Canada, you don`t charge G.S.T. Yet,
you get to claim (or deduct from the G.S.T. collected
by you) all the "input tax credits" (G.S.T. that you
paid for business purposes) to make that export. The
idea, I suppose, is to encourage exporting.

However, if you export products other than tangible,
physical goods, beware! There are many pitfalls to
watch out for.

As one example, consider digitized products that you
might sell from your Canadian website, such as
e-books, downloadable software, or subscriptions to
content. You would be considered to be selling
"intangible personal property". Unless your product
is also considered "intellectual property" (such as
software or e-books that you produced or have obtained
the rights for), you will have to charge G.S.T. The
reason why, according to the Canada Customs and Revenue
Agency, is that it COULD be used inside Canada, even if
it isn`t.

Say you sold a membership for accessing digitized
content (from various sources) on your Canadian
website to a customer in the United States. Since
there are no restrictions as to where the intangible
personal property may be used, and the property is
not considered intellectual property (nor the
provision of a service), the American customer is
subject to G.S.T., even if he never comes to
Canada.

Strangely, the same logic doesn`t apply when an
American buys a regular book (or a car) which he
COULD bring into Canada with him and use here.
It is true that it is easier for Canada to assess
such items at the border than in cyberspace, but
I know of no cases of Americans being taxed on
the books or cars they bring with them when they
come to live in Canada for about half the year.

As a Canadian registrant, one way you might legally
avoid this silly March Hare is to explicitly state on
your website and invoice that use of such intangible
personal property in Canada is prohibited (or
requires an additional fee and the payment of G.S.T.).

3. When Imports Aren`t Imports

Goods shipped to Canada are subject to G.S.T. on
importation. Such tax is often assessed at the border.
But what if you are a Canadian registered for G.S.T.,
selling to a Canadian customer but your supplier is in
a foreign country?

Pretend that your Canadian customer has bought a book
from you from your Canadian website. Your drop ship
supplier is located in the United States and is
registered for G.S.T. You fax your order to the
American company, and they, in turn, ship the book for
you (complete with Customs Declaration and their G.S.T.
Business Number).

Since they paid the G.S.T., you wouldn`t think you
would have to charge it again, would you? "Wrong!",
smiles the Cheshire cat. Since you are a registrant
located in Canada, you are required to charge and
remit the G.S.T.

But you are entitled to input tax credits, aren`t you?
In many cases, the answer is "No".

It may be very difficult for you to satisfy the
documentary and other technical requirements. As an
example, it is not uncommon for American suppliers to
absolutely refuse to give an invoice breaking down the
G.S.T. or to allow you to be the Importer of Record.
This complicates their life unnecessarily and they
just don`t need the aggravation.

There are relieving tax provisions covering drop
shipping, sales agencies, and other situations. In
many cases, unfortunately, the most practical solution
is to allow the tax to be paid twice.

4. When You`re Subject to Tax Where You`re Not
Subject to Tax

It makes sense that countries impose a tax on sales and
income made in their own jurisdiction. But does it make
sense for Germany to tax sales made in the United
States?

In effect, starting July 1, 2003, the European Union
has done just that by imposing an online sales tax.

This means that if someone from England buys an e-book
from someone in the United States, the American should
submit this tax. Of course, If the sale was to someone
in Germany, the tax rate would be different.

The rationale behind this follows: Since countries
can`t collect sales tax on Internet transactions at
their borders, the only way they can collect it (other
than a self-assessment system) is with an online sales
tax. Further, it is claimed that businesses in the
European Union suffer a major competitive disadvantage
because they have to collect Value Added Tax (VAT) but
others don`t.

Do you have an old cell phone lying around your house? The EPA says there are millions of people who do and, as technology improves and prices decrease, the number of idle cell phones will continue to increase every year.

An innovative recycling program started by Nextel, puts old cell phones to good use. The Nextel Refurbishing and Recycling program (NexR2) accepts all kinds of phones, regardless of brand or carrier, and recycled almost two million phones in 2004. However, there are many more phones sitting idle in homes and businesses.

Workers at a Texas recycling center take apart every used phone, test it, clean it, add new software and refurbish it to make it usable again. Some of the phones are more than five years old. Every part that can be salvaged is reused or sent off to be recycled into new materials. Proceeds from the recycled phones are donated to a worthy charity, currently the American Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Services program for military families

DSL Tips.- When you go to a full time internet connection, you paint a big target on yourself for the nefarious netizen underworld (HACKERS) to hack into your computer and use it for sending spam or worse. You need some sort of personal firewall installed on your PC (zonelabs, norton or equivalent) and you need to pick up one of these:

LINKSYS - LINKSYS / WRT54G / 54MBPS / 802.11G / 4-PORT / CABLE/DSL / WIRELESS ROUTER (WIRELESS ROUTERS / GATEWAYS) : It's a secure DSL router

It lets you connect multiple computers into your DSL link (a nice thing) and prevents hackers from port scanning you for vulnerabilities (a necessary thing). If you connect a Windows machine to the internet that doesn't have all available security patches applied, it will become infected -within minutes- and often within just a few seconds. I'm prone to tall tales like most folks on tech forums, but I'm not joking about this.

I use FireFox and Thunderbird and highly recommend both. I've only found one site that does not reliably render with FireFox: http://www.wmi.org/bassfish/reports/northcar/

Works maybe 80% of the time.

BROADBAND TIPS: What's better High Speed Internet Connection: DSL or Cable?

DSL is a direct connect to your provider. Unlike cable which is like a giant LAN. People within your cable group could packet sniff your data and see what you do. Personally I don't want my neighbor's kids watching what I do.

Also, because cable is a shared LAN-like service, it can get slow at night when more people are online. DSL usually doesn't have this problem.

Cable is faster than DSL for gaming. The ping times are better by about 30 points (from my personal experience as (I had DSL and then cable before, but now I'm back to DSL) DSL usually costs less. SBC/Yahoo only charges $15 a month in many places vs $30+(Only for the first few months) for cable.

When you compare the two, ask how much DOWN stream do you get and how much UP stream do you get (the more the better) and how much does it cost and use that to make your final decision. You pick up the phone and dial any number just as you would do with the regular phone service. The signal from your phone is being sent to the VoIP adapter where it's being converted to a digital signal, then sent to your router, then your high-speed modem and finally, to the internet network, where it will be routed to the traditional telephone network, and finally, to the destination number you dialed. As far as the service quality, in most cases you will barely notice any difference.

Broadband phone or Internet phone (VoIP) takes ordinary telephony to new heights of versatility and affordability.
